House and Studio is the artisan craft and art project of Louis House, a woodworker and artist in Newfoundland, Canada.
The Small Batch Idea
Producing craft in small batches benefits both the craftsperson, who works with higher efficiency, and the buyer, who gets a limited availability, special item. The model allows artisans to try new things and work in new ways.
The Studio is not a single workspace, but a collection of craftspeople and artists across several media whose work harmonizes with notions of quality and aesthetic value.
Firmitas, Utilitas, Venustas
2,000 years ago, Vitruvius asserted that an architectural structure must exhibit the three qualities of firmitas, utilitas, venustas – that is, it must be solid, useful, and beautiful. That's the House and Studio standard. Each piece is an heirloom.
